The Black Joke (Francis Francis ) ….

This little beauty from A Book on Angling by Francis Francis is a super little fly to dress. With the double tinsel rib either side of the red floss, it takes a little care to get right. The trick with the ribbing is to wind the floss first and then flank it with the tinsel. had the first ribs been the same width as the others, I would have been a little happier. One thing that looks great is the Jay throat, in this instance the effect is less anemic than some I have seen. I also like the use of cock pheasant tail as a side on the fly. Once again, the soft loop technique works wonders in setting the feathers. I was a little concerned about the size of the head but think it looks fine considering the thickness of the material used in the fly.
